Liu Dao’s "Featuring 1950s" is part of a series of antique cameras from multiple purposes and time periods haunted with the final images they ever captured. Like most island6 artworks, the piece is made with the comparison and similarity between man and machine in mind. Pain is not always remembered for the human, but a heavy electric shock–one which jolts the nervous system and arrests the brain–will never be forgotten. It is visceral and scorching, is the birth of obsession. In "Featuring 1950s", the constant replaying of a model shoot has been burned onto the viewfinder of a Kodak Duaflex IV like a memory. Here, the beauty of Antoinette Monnier slices through the nerves to sear like the beauty of Annabel Leigh in the mind of Humbert Humbert, Nabokov’s protagonist who cannot escape the few simple details from his tryst at thirteen for his enduring years, seeing them everywhere, in the nymphets on the street and most successfully in his English pupil, Dolores Haze, whom he tutors in grammar and poetry day after day and dubs his little Lolita. In this artwork, a looped video shines discretely, like a private memory, as the model adjusts the hair from her face while she reads a book and peers over the cover. In the merging of periods, electricity, lust and love are tied together to burn as one. [Pete Bradt]
