In 2004, video artist Christian Marclay created The Clock, a 24-hour-long video montage of scenes selected from cinema history featuring clocks. The movie disregards space, characters and any kind of synopsis. Yet, it is inevitable that the movie is going somewhere as the scenes come one after another in chronological order, helping the film itself to function as a clock. You can see hundreds of characters in action, whereas people are of secondary importance. They are nameless, hanging in vacuum, lacking any context to hold on to, while the space they exist in becomes a network of indefinable vastness. This makes passing time in its abstraction more important than we can ever experience it. The movement of time becomes the main character. And the dynamism of nothing else but the 24 hours cycle is what makes this fragmented reality so vulnerable and fragile. What if time stops? And what is left when nothing happens next? [András Gál]
