BLURB

Repetitive sounds in the title of “Folding Scaffolding” echo the endless erection, dismantling, and resurrection of scaffolding across China. These wandering construction sites are inhabited by an estimated 200 million migrant workers (民工), without whom the modernization of the country, like all of globalization, is not possible.
This paravent is dedicated to those brave and courageous men and women who left their homes behind and strove off for an unknown future, a better job in a city, in building projects like the World Expo or Olympic stadiums. They sacrificed their bodies, health, and most precious time with loved ones, to trade it for miserable working conditions, long hours and daily rations of rice or soup. Spurred by their will to support their families back home, they unknowingly became the engine of the 21st century.
In recent years, during infrequent visits, many see their little home villages been swallowed whole. Humble towns in the countryside have grown into cities with no less than a million residents, and job opportunities are arising in their places of origin. Not long ago, migrant workers scrounged for employers, yet more and more, employers now scramble in search of skilled laborers. The tides are turning in favor of the salt of the earth.
