BLURB

As China’s consumer middle class explodes, so too does the demand for foreign brands. This video artwork was commissioned by Lee Jeans for a China-wide advertising campaign. Companies like Lee have only recently entered the Chinese market and are employing fresh and innovative methods to attract their youthful clientele. This artwork depicts four artistic young people: a painter, a photographer, a musician, and a man doing talented bike tricks. Each is displayed alone on the screen but when a viewer calls the number listed, the character answers, disappears into the phone, and then is replaced by another figure. This artwork, in many iterations, is displayed in malls all over China, moving to new places every few weeks. Every day thousands of people interact with the piece and become, for an instant, a part of the campaign as they connect with the characters. Each call creates new existences for the characters, making each viewer an integral part of the ongoing art experience. [Pete Bradt]
