BLURB

"Just Call Me Nick" is an interactive multimedia installation made by Island 6 especially for Rockbund Art Museum Christmas Project. Visitors to the museum are suggested to call Santa via the phone number on the screen. When a call is put through, Santa, who is in a hurry distributing gifts, starts to rummage about for his phone. Finally he fails to pick it up, and returns to his trip. "Just Call Me Nick" is a tongue-in-cheek satire of the commercial entity of Santa Claus, commonly mistaken as a revered religious tradition. In the words of Coca-Cola, "the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on our advertising". Invented in 1931 by illustrator Haddon Sundblom, the figure of St. Nicholas has morphed through the ages, depending on who the artist was, where he was based and what he was drawing for. The unshaven, greasy man in a wrinkled Santa suit exposes the sobering reality behind a well-loved myth, and comments on the effects of relentless commercialization on our lives and belief systems. Moreover, the phrase "Just call me..." is an informal way to introduce oneself to new acquaintances. Our St. Nicholas recognizes that he is no longer the revered saint of yesterday, but the jolly man giving presents in today's world. Similarly, Liu Dao's artwork is frequently irreverent and humorous in approach, which represents an attempt to break down the barriers between art and art-viewer, bridging the metaphorical and literal gap between an artwork on a wall and the viewer who had to stand and look at it from far away, usually in a sombre, hushed and intimidating museum or gallery environment. Liu Dao wants art to be about the people, which is why it makes interactive art that can lead people to re-consider what art means, how it is made and what role it can have in their lives. All in all, Just Call Me Nick is an all around representation of the Liu Dao Art Collective's belief and intention. [Loo Ching Ling 吕晶琳 & Jack Mur]
