BLURB

In the heady, honking world of the Bicycle Capital, bewildered visitors regularly find themselves caught in a frightening onslaught of these ubiquitous two-wheeled contraptions. Zipping along busy roads, trundling along tiny lanes, parked outside apartment blocks, schools, markets and government offices, bicycles have become practically synonymous with China. How did it all start? A little girl on a four-wheeler, carefully coached by her doting parents. A rickety velocipede precariously pedalled by the "Big Noses" in 1870s Beijing, to the amazement of the gawking Chinese. Affectionately termed the "self-moving car" 自行车, these have spawned a nation-wide obsession, a full-fledged dependence and a new, uniquely-Chinese way of life. [Loo Ching Ling 吕晶琳]
