She, in essence, is the balance between real and surreal. The female identity and her fragility have been the subject of many art works, pieces of literature, and in more recent times the fierce subject of debate. In “Apsara On the Pearl”, Liu Dao has taken this aspect and revealed her true nature, that of whimsical grace. She provokes us to mark her balance, endurance, and strength. Celebrating her unbound spirit she alights around the Shanghai Oriental Pearl tower in broadcast of her abilities and her effeminate nature. This delicate move is not one to go unnoticed nor is it to invoke frail imagery; rather it displays elegance, determination and courage. She is able to cast forward into the unknown a message that grace and poise are a celebration of Shanghai, of China and of all women. [Lelia Pollett]
