BLURB

Lei Shifu and Huo Nainai live in a quiet, maze-like nong tang hidden off the relentlessly fashionable Nanjing Xi Lu. Ignored by the hip-erati, photographed by tourists and thankfully forgotten by ambitious property developers, Lei, Huo, and their posse of fellow septuagenarians spend their days sitting under deciduous plantane trees, surrounded by lines of laundry and mountains of junk. Their children have moved on. Their friends have passed. They wouldn't recognise the Pudong skyline if they had the energy to totter over to the Bund to see it. Their Daily Tweets come from the little chirping caged birds outside their flats. Much like the pretty choten gan bobbing about in tiny spheres, the original denizens of Shanghai - its first movers and shakers - are increasingly isolated in the hub-bub of modern development. The familiar is shrinking, day by day, into glass-encased bubbles. All they can do now is gape and gawk, goggle-eyed, at a city that is jetting out, further and further away from shore.
