There’s a phone number on the rug that this blurb accompanies. If you call it, you’ll likely receive a message that has, in some small way, coded language. A perfect example of coded language is The Ten-Code. This refers to a series of numerical codes developed in America in 1937 to limit the amount of speech needed by police to convey messages through radio. The quip most people are readily familiar with is 10-4, which means I copy you/I have received your message. Its inception and development can be credited to Charles Hopper, communications director for the Illinois State Police. The early 2000s saw a brazen revival in this method of communication and expression via cell phones. The text message precipitated such odd (but now blandly standard) terms such as wtf, lol, and omg. Communication is so rapid today that some lines get blurred when it comes to the transmitting of information (formal or not). More room for interpretation in this generation of quick-speak than there was in the last. It's hard to tell if the speak changed the culture or the other way around. So what does a rug have to do with any of that? Maybe it’s the cold comfort of knowing that sometimes the things that keep you warm have an agenda. And a soft reminder that, although we’re living with the latest ten code, it very likely will not be the last. [Ryan Nimmo]
