Inside the body’s housing and aligned within- juxtaposed and parallel, confined in dim spaces and jousting out, the music of the body parts begin. The autonomic hissing of blood, the repeating squeeze, piston, rack and pinion can be heard among the dry crackling of ligaments. It all sets in, the precognitive dream of delirium and delight. The deeper you descend, the more dream becomes real, the warm embrace of the water and the rapture of the deep set in. In ‘Nitrogen Narcosis” we are confronted with the desire to be drawn away from the visual, to switch off the senses and take a break from the battery of images we deal with everyday- from billboards to public transport TV. In the immortal words of Saul Bellows, “The emergence from distraction is aesthetic bliss”. [Margaret Johnson]
