The idea of replicants has already appeared in the first play about robots, in R.U.R. by Czech writer Karel Čapek in 1920. This play introduced the word robot, although the robots were not machines. They were assembled out of biologically engineered parts. They were almost indistinguishable from humans, but were used to do forced labor (why else would you make them?), which resulted in a rebellion and eventually in the extinction of humanity. The idea has lived on ever since. Be they machines like in Terminator or replicants like in Blade Runner, when humanity creates smart non-human humans, it’s always troublesome. Our present isn’t so different from this science fiction. Every time we open the computer, we enter our well-deserved social media lives. Everybody is almost the same here as in real life, just a little different. Just a bit better. Almost perfect, that is, enhanced. So much that we can’t live without our digital selves anymore. And this is when we realize that we are the ones leading the post-human revolution. [András Gál]
