Becoming a police officer was an indication of status in my family. It wasn't as if I came from a long line of officers or even law abiding, virtuous men and women. I am the predecessor of farmers and rural people who work with their hands, so I know in my father's eyes I was rising from the mud. When I told my parents of my decision their eyes swelled with pride. They weren't ashamed to collect me in their strong arms and goad. They ordered a round of expensive beers and every time the overworked waitrer attended to or neared our table my father boasted, "My daughter is going to be an officer ! My little girl." He thought the waiter should have married me then and there. The pictures and Hollywood films I had seen of soldiers and officers as a kid made me believe in their powers, too. I imagined I'd protect and save. I imagined I'd hold a gun. I imagined I'd dodge bullets. I imagined I'd win the hearts of the damsels in distress. But most days I sleep with my feet on the dashboard dreaming; the closest I ever have been to authority in this small town. [Jak Mussington]
