BLURB

I met him in Monte Carlo for the ’64 races and quickly fell victim to his fast car and dark, brooding eyes - a deadly combination. Of course my hesitation was palpable when I decided to join on his next "trip of a lifetime." Quarter-life crisis had settled in and I could not be restrained, I needed something wild (and I liked the outfit.) The severity of everything was apparent when he tossed out my 2nd and 3rd Bottega from the MG somewhere outside of Milan on a dusty road. Citing velocity and ergonom-something as the reason. Hours were spent cataloging and fuming over lost belongings and lipstick was constantly smeared across my face. It wasn’t until we were somewhere in the Russian Steppe that I started to notice the stars in the vast-unpolluted sky. In the morning the wild green peaks leapt forward from the valley surrounding us. I felt small for the first time and had finally run out of lip rouge. Descending into the Kazakh desert we made our way to the Aral Sea, stopping through markets and nomadic camps to bide the evenings. Of course I indulged myself just every now and then with silk brought from China and spices from exotic lands. The more friendly and worn faces I met, the less I continued searching for that thin patina of the west everywhere and the less I wanted to fill my suitcases, suitcase. After the miles, days and nights passed, I awoke to the hot sun rising in Samarqand. Arabic, French, Russian and a myriad of other tongues swirled through my mind as we drove down the legendary Pamir highway. We followed paths forged long ago by ancient Silk Road travelers, stood atop cliff side fortresses and lounged in ancient caravanserais. Finally reaching our destination in Tajikistan, I knew that I was changed. The luggage and lipstick didn’t matter, I finally felt truly wild. [Margaret Johnson]
